There are many reasons why a luxury watch may need to be repaired at one time or another. One of the most common reasons is failure to provide the periodic maintenance that a watch requires to continue to perform correctly in the long run (read more about this in the overhaul section).
The picture below illustrates this point clearly. The movement on the left shows a Rolex Oyster Perpetual that suffered water damage due to a faulty gasket, a result of the failure to perioridally overhaul the watch. The picture on the right clearly demonstrates damage due to oxidation, which is also preventable with proper maintenance.
In addition to damage caused by improper maintenance, watches might break if they are subject to extreme shock from drops or accidents. Regardless of the reason, a very expensive watch like a Patek Philippe or Rolex must be repaired by a very skilled watchmaker to restore it to like-new, working condition.
